Ahead of the 2028 LA Olympic and Paralympic Games, TOM is building the ‘Guttmann Portfolio’ honoring the path-breaking work and legacy of Sir Ludwig Guttmann. The Guttmann Portfolio of Products will be the world’s most robust portfolio of open-source, accessible and affordable solutions for inclusive sports.
As part of this effort, TOM aims to make a distinct contribution to the success of the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games by making TOM products freely available to athletes, para-athletes, families, caregivers, Angelenos, and visitors.
Our vision extends beyond a single event in the summer of 2028. Over the next three years, TOM will engage universities, schools, and care centers in the U.S. and worldwide through design competitions, build workshops, and showcases at international gatherings on inclusive sports.
After the 2028 Games, the TOM Process can be scaled to all 50 states of the U.S. where it will continue to inspire cutting-edge educational programs and strengthen inclusive design worldwide. Click here to view the full portfolio.
Sir Ludwig Guttmann
Sir Ludwig Guttmann z”l, born 1899, is the founder of Paralympic sports. He was a prominent Jewish neurologist in Germany, who had to flee Nazi persecution in 1939. In Britain, he revolutionized treatment of spinal cord injuries through active care, physical activities and social reintegration. At the time, the life expectancy of paraplegic after their injury was six months!
Guttmann believed that sport is vital for recovery from spinal cord injuries. He eventually initiated the Stoke Mandeville Games in 1948, which grew into today’s Paralympic Games. Guttmann was Knighted in 1966. He passed away in 1980.
