TOM: Atlanta — a passionate community of students from @tomgeorgiatech, @tom.emoryuniversity, @kennesawstateuniversity (KSU) — came together to design and build innovative solutions that make daily life more accessible and empowering for people with disabilities.

Here are just a few of the incredible projects built this weekend:

🎮 Ben’s Joystick & Bite Switch: Designed for a podcaster with CP to help him control his wheelchair and devices more independently.
📱 Ben’s Phone Mount: A powered, adjustable arm that moves with his wheelchair — letting him stay connected wherever he goes.
🧃 Max’s Wheelchair Holders: Custom 3D-printed cup and phone holders so he can navigate campus hands-free.
🚲 Noah’s Adaptive Bike: A low-cost version of the $2,000 Amtryke — complete with supportive seat, straps, and push handle for his mom.
🧠 Noah F’s Vending Machine: A sensory-friendly “delayed gratification” device for a young adult with Autism.
🦾 Eric’s Hand Cycle Adaptations: Bite switch and head-movement sensors for riders with limited hand dexterity.
💺 Henry’s Bath Chair: Adjustable, affordable, and designed for a 1-year-old with ring chromosome disease.
🪑 Gracie’s Foldable Table: A motorized tray that folds out from her wheelchair, enabling independence for meals, study, and play.
🎨 CJ’s Custom TMT: A larger, personalized version of TOM’s Toddler Mobility Trainer, adapted for his communication device.
🧍‍♂️ Nathan’s Prosthetic Cover: A flexible guard preventing clothing tears caused by prosthetic mechanisms.
🔒 Saif’s Seatbelt Guide: A clever holder that keeps wheelchair seatbelts from getting caught in the wheels.

Each project was co-created with a Need-Knower, turning empathy into innovation.

We had help this week from some wonderful volunteers from the community, including students from @parsonsschoolofdesign. Yesterday we brought the 3DTMT uptown to the amazing team at @columbia University's @weinbergcpcenter for another round of testing.
💡🙌 Ethan was such a delight and is a great candidate for the 3DTMT. He was comfortable, confident and hopefully will be ready to roll in no time! 🚴‍♂️✨

These sessions are such an important part of our journey as we continue to refine, test, and validate the design together with @linkpbc and @makegoodnola.

Our shared goal? To make the 3DTMT accessible to the public very soon so more people can benefit from this innovation 🌍❤️

During the Fellowship Kickoff, our Fellows took part in an experiential learning activity designed to build awareness and perspective. They rotated through daily activities such as preparing food and lifting objects while experiencing simulated physical challenges. This hands-on exercise was a powerful reminder of why inclusive, human-centered design is essential for creating effective assistive technology. 💙
